Cooler inflation lowered the market’s immediate policy risk, but the session’s more revealing message came from leadership. Semiconductors, memory, data centers, momentum, high beta, and small caps advanced while the Magnificent Seven and software fell. That rotation was constructive, although a 1.34 TRIN showed that advancing volume did not confirm the improving breadth as strongly as the price gains suggested.
🧊 CPI Cooled the Threat as AI Leadership Changed Hands
The S&P 500 gained 0.26%, the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.54%, and the Russell 2000 total return index advanced 0.61%. The Dow slipped 0.04% as the market rotated toward technology infrastructure, momentum, high beta, and smaller companies.
Memory, semiconductors, data centers, quantum computing, momentum, and high beta led. Lumentum’s results reinforced optical-networking demand, while CoreWeave, Super Micro, and Nebius helped extend the AI infrastructure story.
The rally did not require the Magnificent Seven. That is healthier than concentrated index strength, but TRIN at 1.34 and equal weight’s modest gain show that the improvement was not yet a full-volume breadth thrust.
The next session must show whether AI infrastructure and small caps can withstand negative post-close reactions in Cisco, Cerebras, and Coherent while PPI and jobless claims retest the market’s new inflation and rate assumptions.
Rotation Found More Support, but Not Full Confirmation
The prior Playbook argued that concentrated mega-cap weakness was making a rotating market look more defensive than it was. The test was whether CPI would allow equal weight, small caps, banks, homebuilders, semiconductors, and intermediate breadth to continue confirming the rotation.
CPI was mild, small caps and semiconductors advanced, the McClellan Oscillator improved to 12.50, and the number of S&P 500 stocks above their 50-day averages rose from 320 to 330. Banks also gained. Homebuilders, however, fell 2.32%, equal weight trailed the S&P slightly, and TRIN rose above 1.00.
The evidence confirmed that risk appetite survived outside mega caps and improved in several cyclically sensitive groups. It did not confirm a uniform broad-market expansion with strong advancing-volume support.
Still unresolved: Whether the rotation can become durable enough to lift equal weight and intermediate breadth without depending on repeated earnings surprises from the AI infrastructure complex.

📊 Three Charts That Explain August 12’s Market
The visual story is a change in leadership, confirmation from optical networking, and a collapse in immediate event risk. The finished charts should be checked for persistence beyond this single session rather than treated as proof that the rotation is already durable.

Chart 2: Lumentum Put Optical Demand on the Screen

Chart 3: CPI Risk Collapsed Fastest at the Front of the Volatility Curve

📊 What Moved the Market Today: Two Primary Drivers and Three Important Supporting Forces
The market had two genuine primary drivers. Mild CPI reduced the immediate threat from inflation and Fed policy, while a cluster of AI infrastructure results gave investors somewhere specific to redeploy risk. The remaining developments helped shape the reaction but should not be treated as equally powerful causes.
🧊 CPI Removed the Immediate Policy Threat
July CPI rose 0.1% for the month and 3.4% from a year earlier. Core CPI increased 0.2% for the month and 2.5% year over year. Shelter rose only 0.1%, while energy declined 1.5%. The report was mild enough to reduce concern that the Federal Reserve would need to respond more aggressively to inflation.
Stocks responded constructively, immediate volatility fell sharply, and growth leadership improved. The rate response was more nuanced: IEF gained 0.10%, but TLT lost 0.10% and the 30-year yield edged higher. CPI removed a near-term obstacle without producing a complete duration rally.
🧠 AI Spending Moved Down the Infrastructure Stack
Results and guidance from CoreWeave, Super Micro Computer, Nebius, and Lumentum reinforced demand for compute, servers, data centers, memory, lasers, and optical networking. Lumentum reported adjusted EPS of $3.23 and approximately $1.01 billion in revenue, then guided the next quarter well above prior expectations.
The reaction spread through the physical AI complex. DRAM gained 7.68%, QTUM rose 2.52%, DTCR added 2.43%, and SMH advanced 2.08%. At the same time, MAGS fell 1.07% and IGV lost 0.81%, making the leadership shift more important than the modest headline-index gain.
🏃 Risk Appetite Broadened by Factor and Capitalization
Momentum, high beta, small-cap growth, small-cap value, regional banks, and Nasdaq equal weight all advanced. SPHB gained 1.66%, MTUM added 2.07%, IWO rose 0.80%, IWN gained 0.43%, and KRE advanced 0.74%.
The broadening was real, but it was not uniform. RSP gained only 0.18%, the Dow slipped, consumer discretionary and materials fell, and homebuilders dropped sharply. This was expansion by factor and capitalization, not a market-wide surge.
📉 Falling Volatility Prevented a Rate Scare
VIX9D fell to 11.09, VIX declined to 14.55, VVIX dropped to 88.5, and MOVE fell 7.48%. Credit remained calm, with HYG and JNK modestly higher. The combination allowed equity risk appetite to improve even though long-duration Treasuries failed to rally.
The market therefore absorbed the CPI report without translating it into a disruptive move in yields, credit, or volatility. The lack of stress mattered, but it supported the rally rather than initiating it.
🛢️ Oil Backed Away Without Resolving Hormuz
WTI crude declined 0.46% after the prior session’s geopolitical surge. The pullback reduced one source of immediate inflation pressure, but unresolved shipping and geopolitical risk around the Strait of Hormuz kept the energy story from disappearing.
Energy gained only 0.16%, refiners rose 1.31%, and airlines slipped 0.25%. Those reactions were secondary to CPI and AI earnings and did not define the equity session.

🔍 Market Internals X-Ray: Better Participation Met Weak Volume Confirmation
The headline indexes understated the strength in several risk-on groups, but the internals also prevent a fully bullish reading. Participation improved by issue count and intermediate breadth, while advancing volume remained comparatively weak.
1. Breadth Improved, but TRIN Refused to Confirm
NYSE advancing issues exceeded decliners by 227, NYMO rose to 12.50, and S&P 500 participation above the 50-day average increased to 330. Yet TRIN rose to 1.34, meaning declining volume remained heavy relative to the issue count.
What it means: More stocks improved, but capital did not flow into advancers with the conviction normally associated with a decisive breadth expansion. A TRIN move back below 1.00 alongside continued positive breadth would strengthen the signal.
2. Leadership Broadened Away From Mega Caps
SMH gained 2.08%, DRAM rose 7.68%, DTCR advanced 2.43%, and SPHB added 1.66%. MAGS fell 1.07%, XLG gained only 0.22%, and IGV lost 0.81%.
What it means: The market rewarded AI infrastructure and risk appetite without help from the usual mega-cap leaders. Continued relative strength in SMH versus MAGS would confirm a healthier distribution of leadership.
3. Small Caps Joined, but Equal Weight Did Not Lead
The Russell 2000 total return index gained 0.61%, IWO rose 0.80%, and IWN added 0.43%. RSP, however, gained only 0.18%, trailing the capitalization-weighted S&P 500.
What it means: Broadening appeared most clearly by capitalization and factor rather than across the average S&P stock. Equal-weight outperformance would make the improvement more convincing.
4. Volatility and Credit Stayed Constructive
VIX fell 4.78%, VIX9D dropped 11.42%, VVIX declined 2.64%, and MOVE fell 7.48%. HYG and JNK each advanced modestly.
What it means: Options, Treasury volatility, and credit did not signal systemic stress. The constructive reading would weaken if PPI pushes volatility higher while high-yield credit begins to lag.
The internals support a constructive rotation, not a decisive breadth thrust. Intermediate participation improved, risk-on factors led, and volatility and credit remained calm. TRIN at 1.34 is the clearest reason to require another session of confirmation.

🔎 Open the secondary and after-hours market-moving stories
After-hours boundary: Cisco, Cerebras, and Coherent reported after the 4:00 p.m. ET regular-session close. Their reactions did not cause today’s Performance Table and belong only in the next-session risk assessment.
📈 The Next-Session Playbook: Can AI Leadership Survive a Higher Expectations Bar?
The next session combines another inflation test with a direct challenge to today’s strongest leadership. PPI and jobless claims will retest rates and growth expectations, while the market must digest three negative after-hours reactions from AI suppliers that nevertheless reported strong demand.
✅ Bullish confirmations
- SMH, DRAM, and DTCR hold relative strength despite negative post-close AI reactions.
- Russell 2000 participation continues and RSP begins outperforming the S&P 500.
- NYSE breadth stays positive while TRIN moves back below 1.00.
- Long-term yields remain contained after PPI, with credit and volatility still calm.
⚠️ Bearish warnings
- AI infrastructure reverses as Cisco, Cerebras, and Coherent reset expectations.
- PPI pushes the 30-year yield higher while TLT and homebuilders extend their weakness.
- TRIN remains above 1.00 while the advance-decline line turns negative.
- VIX9D and MOVE rebound while high-yield credit stops confirming calm conditions.
🎯 Five-point trader game plan
- Check PPI, jobless claims, and the long end of the Treasury curve before interpreting the equity open.
- Compare SMH with MAGS to see whether infrastructure leadership survives the after-hours earnings test.
- Compare Russell 2000 participation with RSP to distinguish small-cap strength from genuine broad-market expansion.
- Require breadth and volume to agree. Positive NYAD with TRIN below 1.00 would improve confidence.
- Keep the response conditional. Strong indexes with weaker semiconductors, credit, or volatility would signal rotation rather than clean continuation.
🗓️ Three developments to monitor
Activation: Contained PPI, stable long-term yields, resilient AI infrastructure, positive breadth, and TRIN below 1.00.
Interpretation: CPI relief is developing into broader risk acceptance.
Focus: Semiconductors, data centers, small caps, banks, momentum, and high beta.
Invalidation: Leadership reverses while rates and volatility rise.
Activation: Indexes remain stable, but AI infrastructure weakens while other cyclicals or defensives absorb capital.
Interpretation: Risk appetite survives, but leadership rotates again.
Focus: Relative strength in banks, healthcare, real estate, transports, and equal weight.
Invalidation: Credit and breadth deteriorate together.
Activation: Hot PPI, higher long yields, failed AI leadership, negative breadth, elevated TRIN, and rising volatility.
Interpretation: Today’s rally was event relief without durable confirmation.
Focus: Capital preservation, defensive relative strength, and the behavior of credit.
Invalidation: Breadth recovers and semiconductors regain leadership while yields stabilize.
Check three relationships first: the 30-year yield and TLT after PPI, SMH versus MAGS after the AI earnings reactions, and NYSE advance-decline issues paired with TRIN. Together they will show whether inflation relief, leadership, and participation are confirming one another.
🎯 Bottom Line: Constructive Rotation Still Needs Volume
CPI Opened the Door, and AI Infrastructure Walked Through It
The legitimate bullish evidence is stronger participation in semiconductors, memory, data centers, small caps, momentum, and high beta, supported by improving NYMO, better 50-day participation, stable credit, and falling volatility. The legitimate warning is that TRIN reached 1.34, equal weight did not lead, homebuilders weakened sharply, and good post-close AI results were met with negative stock reactions.
The constructive interpretation strengthens if AI infrastructure absorbs the after-hours pressure, breadth stays positive, TRIN falls below 1.00, and long-term yields remain contained after PPI. The warning becomes more serious if semiconductors reverse while rates, volatility, and declining volume rise together. Today improved the market’s structure, but the next session must show that the improvement can survive a harder expectations test.
Data and source notes
Regular-session equity data cover 9:30 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. ET on August 12, 2026. The information cutoff for after-hours developments was approximately 5:00 p.m. ET.
