Monday’s rally was healthier than Friday’s because participation broadened while oil and long-term yields fell, but the repair was not complete. Small caps joined the advance and breadth momentum turned positive, yet mega-cap growth still did most of the heavy lifting and semiconductors lagged the Nasdaq. The result was a constructive risk-on session with one important test still ahead.
🛢️ Oil Relief Broadened the Rally—But Chips Still Lagged
The S&P 500 gained 1.48%, the Nasdaq rose 2.13%, the Dow advanced 1.32%, and the Russell 2000 added 1.73% as oil and long-term yields fell.
Amazon, software, communication services, high beta, airlines, homebuilders, and small-cap growth led an offensive—not defensive—advance.
Breadth repaired Friday’s weakness, but MAGS still outpaced equal weight and SMH lagged the Nasdaq. Monday improved the structure without completing the broadening process.
Can equal weight and semiconductors begin outperforming while oil and the 10-year yield preserve Monday’s relief? Improvement in RSP/SPY and SMH/QQQ would turn a constructive rebound into a more convincing broadening signal.
Monday Answered Most—but Not All—of Friday’s Test
Friday’s Playbook asked whether the earnings repair could broaden into semiconductors, equal weight, and healthier participation while rates stabilized.
Monday supplied healthier participation and rate relief. NYAD reached +1,053, NYMO turned positive, new highs exceeded new lows, the Russell 2000 gained 1.73%, and the 10-year yield fell about 5.9 basis points.
The breadth and rates portions were confirmed. Equal weight participated but still trailed the S&P 500, while SMH’s 0.91% gain badly lagged the Nasdaq’s 2.13% advance.
Still unresolved: Whether the rally can reduce its dependence on mega-cap growth and gain true semiconductor confirmation.

📊 Three Charts That Explain Monday’s Market
Monday’s story requires one direct breadth comparison and two important single-symbol charts: SPY versus RSP shows how far participation broadened, crude oil identifies the macro relief catalyst, and SMH reveals why the technology repair remains unfinished.

Chart 2: Crude Oil—The Relief Catalyst That Powered the Rotation

Chart 3: SMH—Technology’s Missing Confirmation

📊 What Moved the Market Today: Two Main Engines and Three Important Influences
Monday did not have five equally powerful catalysts. The broad rally was primarily driven by geopolitical relief flowing through oil and yields, together with Amazon-led earnings strength. Manufacturing, Boeing, and China’s memory-chip expansion explained meaningful pieces of the tape without controlling the entire market.
🛢️ Iran De-escalation Hopes Pulled Oil—and Yields—Lower
President Trump held off on new attacks against Iran and suggested talks aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran disputed that negotiations were occurring, but oil traders still reduced the immediate supply-risk premium. WTI settled 5.1% lower at $80.34; the clean October Brent comparison was about 4.7% lower because the front month rolled after Friday.
The relief traveled across markets. The 10-year Treasury yield fell about 5.9 basis points, airlines gained 4.44%, homebuilders rose 2.83%, solar advanced 3.87%, and high-beta stocks outperformed. Energy fell 1.28%, exploration and production lost 1.76%, and refiners declined 1.99%.
☁️ Amazon Extended the Earnings Gap and Reframed AI Leadership
Amazon’s post-earnings strength continued after the company reported 20% sales growth, 43% operating-income growth, and 37% AWS growth—the fastest cloud expansion in 18 quarters. The stock gained another 4.6% Monday and crossed $3 trillion in market value.
The leadership extended beyond one company. MAGS gained 3.67%, communication services rose 2.86%, software advanced 3.00%, AIQ gained 2.85%, and S&P 500 growth rose 2.21%. Yet XMAG gained only 0.57%, RSP advanced 0.98%, Apple remained weak, and SMH rose only 0.91%.
🏭 Manufacturing Accelerated, but Prices Stayed Uncomfortable
July ISM Manufacturing rose to 55.6 from 53.3, beating the roughly 54.0 consensus and reaching its strongest level since May 2022. Production reached 58.5, new orders 56.7, and employment expanded for the first time in 33 months. Prices paid remained elevated at 71.1.
Industrials gained 1.85%, small caps 1.73%, regional banks 1.31%, and copper 0.55%. The strong report supported the cyclical side of the rally, but Treasury yields continued falling—evidence that oil and geopolitical relief had more influence over rates than the manufacturing surprise.
✈️ Boeing Certification Added Real Weight to the Dow Rally
The FAA certified Boeing’s long-delayed 737 MAX 7 after requiring flight-control, crew-alerting, and anti-ice changes. Boeing rose roughly 1.2% after the midday report and finished 6.7% higher.
Aerospace and defense gained 2.68%, industrials rose 1.85%, and the Dow advanced 1.32% to a record close. The certification strengthened industrial participation, but it could not explain the larger Nasdaq and communication-services gains.
💾 China’s Memory Expansion Highlighted the Semiconductor Gap
Reuters reported that China’s CXMT is considering another Beijing DRAM plant. Combined with other projects, the expansion could more than double capacity and increase competitive pressure on established memory producers such as Micron.
SMH gained only 0.91% while the Nasdaq rose 2.13%, software advanced 3.00%, and AIQ gained 2.85%. Yet the DRAM ETF still rose 1.51%, so the report helps explain memory-industry pressure without fully accounting for semiconductor underperformance.

🔍 Market Internals X-Ray: Real Repair, Incomplete Broadening
The strongest improvement occurred beneath the headline indexes. Breadth momentum, highs and lows, volume distribution, small caps, and offensive factors all confirmed the advance. The limitations appeared in relative performance: capitalization-weighted growth still dominated equal weight, semiconductors lagged, and credit remained mixed.
1. Breadth Repaired Friday’s Weakness
NYAD improved from -148 to +1,053, NYMO moved from -2.40 to +17.25, new highs expanded from 47 to 100, new lows contracted from 65 to 38, and TRIN fell from 1.07 to 0.87.
What it means: Advancing stocks had favorable volume support, confirming a healthier tape. A durable improvement would keep NYMO positive while highs continue outnumbering lows; a reversal in both would weaken the repair.
2. Broader Participation Did Not Eliminate Concentration
The Russell 2000 gained 1.73% and the total market advanced 1.53%, but MAGS rose 3.67%, RSP gained 0.98%, and XMAG added only 0.57%.
What it means: Participation broadened across market capitalization, yet mega-cap growth remained the strongest engine. Improving RSP/SPY and XMAG/SPY relative strength would confirm that the advance is becoming less dependent on its largest stocks.
3. High Beta Confirmed Risk Appetite; Chips Did Not Confirm Technology
High beta gained 2.55% while low volatility slipped 0.03%. Software rose 3.00%, AIQ 2.85%, and communication services 2.86%, but SMH advanced only 0.91%.
What it means: Monday represented active risk-taking rather than defensive stabilization. The unresolved issue is the location of leadership: SMH outperforming the Nasdaq would strengthen the technology message, while continued lag would leave the rally dependent on platforms and software.
4. Cross-Asset Relief Was Logical, but Credit Was Uneven
Oil and long yields fell, Treasury volatility declined, and the VIX curve remained orderly at 13.28 for VIX9D, 15.86 for VIX, and 18.93 for VIX3M. HYG and LQD declined, however, while JNK, PFF, and EMB gained.
What it means: Rates and volatility confirmed relief, while credit did not provide a clean endorsement or rejection. Distribution-adjusted credit performance and follow-through matter more than one mixed session.
Monday delivered a meaningful breadth repair and an unmistakably offensive rally. The evidence supports a constructive interpretation, but not a breadth-thrust conclusion. Equal weight, ex-Magnificent Seven stocks, semiconductors, and clean credit confirmation remain the next layer of proof.

🔎 Open the secondary and after-hours market-moving stories
After-hours boundary: Palantir, Snap, and Vertex reported after the 4:00 p.m. ET cash close. Their results belong to Tuesday’s setup and did not cause Monday’s regular-session advance.
📈 The Next-Session Playbook: Can the Repair Become Self-Sustaining?
Monday improved the market’s structure, but Tuesday must show whether that improvement can persist without another oversized contribution from mega-cap growth. The key is not whether indexes simply rise again; it is whether equal weight, semiconductors, breadth, rates, and credit confirm the move together.
✅ Bullish confirmations
- RSP and XMAG begin improving relative to SPY while the major indexes remain firm.
- SMH outperforms QQQ or the Nasdaq instead of merely participating.
- NYMO stays positive, new highs continue exceeding new lows, and TRIN remains constructive.
- Crude and the 10-year yield avoid sharp reversals while high beta and small caps retain leadership.
⚠️ Bearish warnings
- Crude reverses higher as diplomatic hopes weaken, renewing inflation and yield pressure.
- NYMO turns negative or new lows overtake new highs after only one day of improvement.
- RSP and SMH underperform more sharply while MAGS remains the sole source of strength.
- VIX and credit weaken together, converting Monday’s mixed credit reading into a clearer warning.
🎯 Five-point trader game plan
- Check crude oil and the 10-year yield before interpreting equity strength; Monday’s relief depended on both.
- Compare RSP with SPY and SMH with QQQ. Relative improvement matters more than another isolated green close.
- Use NYMO, new highs and lows, and TRIN to determine whether participation is holding after the opening rotation.
- Watch Palantir’s effect on IGV and AIQ, then test whether the strength extends to semiconductors or stays concentrated in software.
- Keep sector exposure aligned with confirmation: favor broader participation only if equal weight and chips improve; treat renewed mega-cap-only leadership as a narrower setup.
🗓️ Three developments to monitor
Activation: RSP and SMH improve relative to SPY and QQQ while NYMO remains positive and oil and yields stay contained.
Interpretation: Monday’s relief is becoming a self-sustaining broadening move.
Focus: Semiconductors, small and mid caps, industrials, banks, and high beta.
Invalidation: A renewed concentration gap accompanied by weaker breadth.
Activation: Indexes remain firm, but RSP or SMH lags while oil, yields, and breadth stay stable.
Interpretation: The rally remains constructive but dependent on selective growth leadership.
Focus: Software, communication services, consumer discretionary, airlines, and homebuilders.
Invalidation: Broader relative strength improves or the internals turn negative.
Activation: Oil or yields reverse while NYMO weakens, new lows expand, and volatility and credit deteriorate together.
Interpretation: Monday was a temporary relief move rather than a durable repair.
Focus: Defensive quality and relative resilience; watch extended growth, airlines, homebuilders, and high beta for reversal risk.
Invalidation: Oil and yields settle while breadth quickly recovers.
Check crude oil and the 10-year yield first, then compare RSP/SPY and SMH/QQQ. If the macro relief holds and both relative-strength relationships improve while NYMO remains positive, Monday’s breadth repair will have gained the confirmation it still lacks.
🎯 Bottom Line: A Better Rally, Not Yet a Complete Breakout
Monday Repaired Friday’s Breadth Problem Without Solving Concentration
The bullish evidence was legitimate: all four major indexes rose more than 1%, NYAD reached +1,053, NYMO turned positive, new highs exceeded new lows, TRIN fell below 1, small caps participated, and lower oil and yields supported offensive groups. The caution is equally specific. MAGS and growth still substantially outperformed equal weight, semiconductors lagged the Nasdaq, and credit did not provide clean confirmation.
The constructive interpretation strengthens if RSP and SMH begin outperforming while oil, yields, and breadth remain stable. It weakens if crude reverses, NYMO turns negative, or leadership narrows further. Monday was a meaningful risk-on repair—not yet a full breadth thrust.
Data and source notes
Market session: Monday, August 3, 2026, 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET. Regular-session causation uses information available by the 4:00 p.m. ET cash close. After-hours earnings are labeled separately as next-session inputs.
The Performance Table capture time and timezone were not supplied. Cash-index closes were reconciled to final figures. Extended-hours readings for /ES, /CL, /BTC, /GC, /SI, /HG, and /NG may include movement after the cash close. SKEW was explicitly stale, and CPCE requires caution until its update time is confirmed.
NYAD and NYMO crossed from negative prior readings to positive current readings, making their displayed percentage-change fields misleading. The analysis uses the readings and direction—not those percentage fields. The closing TICK reading is a point-in-time snapshot rather than a full-session breadth measure.
Primary reporting and source materials are linked within the driver and secondary-story cards. No after-hours result is presented as a cause of Monday’s regular-session advance.
