Stock Market Trends Made Easy
Welcome to Market Scholars
This class focuses on finding stocks in strong trends by conducting top-down analysis. It is based off of a trading philosophy that “a rising tide lifts all boats” and that “an object in motion stays in motion”. During class, we examine outperforming and underperforming sectors by utilizing a top down tool, which is updated each week with new data. Once we identify sectors of interest, we then look for the stocks with the strongest trends and attractive characteristics within those sectors. While we are open to the idea of using short selling techniques, the core focus of our class is typically on the long side of the market. In particular, we like to focus on stocks with so much strength that they’re already hitting new yearly price highs. By concentrating on the hottest stocks within the market, we are attempting to position our portfolio specifically in the areas of the market that are currently “working” and seek to let our winners run, while keeping our losses small. While trading stocks that are already up significantly can occasionally be considered dangerous, we try to mitigate our risk by using trailing stops and having a diversified portfolio that can reach up to 33 stock positions at its maximum capacity. This strategy works best when general markets are strongly trending. The class itself uses a team-based approach where class attendees exercise their voice not only through the chats during the stock analysis, but also through the official class vote, which builds the portfolio as the weeks go on.
This class is considered an options beginners class. It focuses on just two basic strategies: selling puts and selling covered calls. Both strategies involve only one strike and allow investors to build an income stream by focusing on the core tenet of time decay. These strategies are often viewed as useful for long-term investors due to the income enhancement and the relatively low amount of risk when implemented with a prudent objective. When selling puts, the class approaches the strategy with a “win-win” mindset due to the insistence of truly desiring to own the company that the puts are sold on. One of two things will occur. Either the stock stays above the strike price and the investor keeps the initial premium received, or the stock falls below the strike price by the expiration date and the investor gets to buy a stock they already wanted to own at a discounted price. The covered calls strategy allows long-term investors to monetize the positions in their portfolios beyond what they may already be receiving in the form of dividends. Typically, the class analyzes covered call set-ups when a position is expected to underperform in the short term even if it continues to be a core position for the longer-term. Each week, open positions are monitored and new trade possibilities are analyzed and voted on by the class.
Strategy Lab started as an experiment years ago and has morphed into a weekly class. The foundation of the class is the performance-tracking of 50 strategies that encompass a wide variety of trading styles including momentum, value, income. It is similar to the concept of “factor investing” that has become popular recently in the world of finance. Each portfolio has 10 securities, which are rebalanced either quarterly or annually. The portfolios are constructed purely on the metrics unique to each strategy. They are left fully allocated during strong and weak market environments, which make them a good comparison to a benchmark index like the S&P 500. The class reviews a handful of strategies each week and analyzes the performance of all strategies at a high level to learn what styles or factors may be driving the overall market at any given time. That knowledge gives attendees valuable insights to apply to their own trades. The class ends each week by having attendees vote on a handful of trade set-ups picked from the reviewed strategies.
Dividend Growth Investing is the style of long term investing dedicated exclusively to stocks that have increased their dividends for long periods of time. The payment of higher amounts of dividends through good economic periods and bad is usually a trait found in high quality companies. Not only does this approach often lead investors to relatively safer companies, it helps supplement income while providing a rising cash flow stream to offset inflation. In this class, an investment in a stock is akin to the ownership of a business where a sale date is not expected in the near term. Instead, the investor benefits directly from the sharing of profits from the business itself through the form of rising dividend payments. While the stock prices of dividend investments will likely go lower during bear markets, many investors choose to reinvest their dividends to buy more shares when prices become more attractive. Each week, the class does a deep dive on business models, competitive environment, fundamental metrics, and technical analysis of a couple of qualified companies, which are voted on to construct long-term portfolios.
This class is designed to for intermediate traders that are looking to start trading options more actively. We will look at using directional strategies to make trades on individual securities or ETFs; like long calls and puts, short and long verticals, iron condors and calendars. As we make different trades, we will manage the trades through to their exits and discuss how and why we make any decisions. The rules for entering any trade are based on four components: watchlist criteria, entry rules, risk management and exit rules.
This class is designed to for advanced traders that are looking to build an inventory of options trades across multiple ETFs and learn how to manage them as one position rather than as a group of separate trades. An important part of this class is risk management: how to allocate a portion of your active trading portfolio to this particular strategy and how to spread that risk across multiple expirations. We also look at what qualifies as a good underlying to build out an inventory and what considerations are made when entering or exiting any position.
This class is designed to help students learn how to build their more passive portion of their personally-managed portfolio using ETFs to represent different asset classes and sectors based on macro economic conditions and intermarket relationships. We develop an allocation in our class and spread it out over major asset classes between U.S. and international stocks and fixed income. In our weekly discussions, we look at how and where we may raise or lower allocations depending on news or trends. This is a great way for investors to know how to position a portfolio from day and offers a base to your investor education that you can build off of using other courses and strategies at Market Scholars.
The purpose of this class to help students learn to recognize and act upon different price and candlestick patterns, relative strength and use various technical indicators to identify entries and exits for swing trade opportunities. One benefit of our class is that you go past the book definitions of patterns and indicators to go deeper based on David’s experience with reading charts over the past two decades. We break down each technical indicator discussed in class to see how it works and how to use it to determine new trade opportunities. We also look at how to develop scan rules based on each indicator to look for potential trades.
