Thank you for your presentation tonight (M.O.). It was interesting, @davidsettle42 and @maketshoclars.com
My Q is: When are you fixing to wean yourself off of Prophet charts? (I did almost 2 years ago.) Might you consider TOS charts?
- April 13, 2018 at 9:00 pm #1952Kirti ParmarMember
I’ll venture a guess — it’ll be shortly after BVZ finishes his new chart setup video 😉
- April 13, 2018 at 9:04 pm #1953
- April 14, 2018 at 2:29 pm #1978
Thanks, Kirti. Finally figured that out this AM. You are too cool for school!
- April 14, 2018 at 2:44 pm #1981
dave johnson also uses prophets. my guess is they will use prophets until it goes away
- April 14, 2018 at 7:04 pm #1993
Thank you, Eugene. It (Prophet) *will* go away. It’s just a matter of time. ERC
- April 14, 2018 at 7:08 pm #1994
- April 14, 2018 at 11:45 pm #2013
yea, i will go away. but it may take longer than expected. they have a deadline date, but im betting it gets extended. i favor prophets more as well since im so used to it. but i have been transitioning to TOS
- April 15, 2018 at 11:21 am #2016
Eugene, I “weaned” myself off Prophet almost a year ago since there is no tech support. Some former IT students are saying that they don’t trust it any longer. I wouldn’t go that far since I have no idea – I just don’t use it. settleda
- April 15, 2018 at 11:23 am #2017
- April 15, 2018 at 6:03 pm #2034
yea, the inevitable will occur. prophet is like going counter trend hahah. TOS is trading with the trend.
- April 16, 2018 at 12:26 am #2058David SettleKeymaster
I never had to transition to TOS charts like other coaches did at Investools because I was out of coaching by the time they made the change. I am working on getting more familiar with TOS as we speak and will eventually start using them ion all my classes and videos. Right now, I still have a better comfort level with Prophet and would rather focus on the content of the class than figuring out how to use the charts during class time. I’ll get there sooner rather than later.
- April 16, 2018 at 2:41 am #2059
i totally agree with d settle. i love prophets as well and have much more comfort level with it as well. continue the great job dave!

In the beginning I was more comfortable with Profit Charts because this is how everything was originally taught. When I started to use ThinkScript and Grids it became more natural.
- April 17, 2018 at 12:28 am #2152
yea one thing is pretty constant…most people hate change, but after change occurs, we all get used to things sooner or later
- April 17, 2018 at 7:19 am #2160
Yup, William, I started on Prophet as well since that’s basically what IT Coaches were using in 2014, although there was a mixture of approaches. That being said, I haven’t used it in over a year.
TOS Charts are much easier to work with think script and grids, agreed.
- April 17, 2018 at 8:50 am #2167
Eugene, for me personally it’s not a big change. I am hoping that others are willing to come along for the ride. ERC
- April 17, 2018 at 4:08 pm #2230
haha for me personally, it was a big change. i have tried to change about 3 times in the past few years, and i reverted back to prophets cause it was too large of a change. but like i said, we are all forced to change soon.
- April 17, 2018 at 4:08 pm #2232
i suspect that for settle too, its a larger change, otherwise he would have already changed
- April 17, 2018 at 8:35 pm #2268
Eugene, I agree that change can be difficult, worrisome and a general hassle factor.
That being said, you might consider changing and moving on up. Prophet is NOT supported by techie folks.
What you do is up to you. I certainly wish you the best!
- April 17, 2018 at 8:54 pm #2273
yes i pretty much use TOS 80% of the time now, so pretty much transitioned already
- April 18, 2018 at 8:59 am #2305
Eugene, I think that’s a good think. For your own benefit. ERC
- April 18, 2018 at 2:04 pm #2340
TOS needs to get those afterhour earnings % reports on them like prophets though. i know you can go to the 1 min chart and see the action, but i like the prophets way of doing it.
- April 18, 2018 at 2:10 pm #2341
Eugene – have you called TOS support? Not all stocks trade pre-market, though. ERC
- April 18, 2018 at 5:45 pm #2410
what do you mean? TOS doesnt offer that premarket data i understood. do they have it? and im not aware of it?
- April 18, 2018 at 8:55 pm #2445
Eugene, not all stocks, ETFs, or CEFs trade pre-market or after market. Let’s take one simple example, the CEF RQI. What do you see on Prophet that you *don’t* see on TOS charts?
- April 19, 2018 at 12:12 am #2456
no im only talking about earnings. i, like alot of people who use prophets like to see the after market movements in a % form.
- April 19, 2018 at 9:17 am #2469
Ah, got ya. Earnings. Rarely pay close attention. ERC
- April 19, 2018 at 4:11 pm #2521
wow, i use it all the time. esp now during earnings season
- April 19, 2018 at 5:10 pm #2530
Eugene, there are earnings every Q. Some will be up, some will be down. Just not high on my priority list as a DGI/DRIP investor. ERC
- April 19, 2018 at 10:19 pm #2576
yes, that is the usual mentality of a longer term trader. shorter term traders keep a close eye on earnings of certain stocks
- May 4, 2018 at 2:00 pm #4070
one thing that annoys me about TOS is you cant view a long term chart in one screen if that makes sense. like if i want to see the all time chart on WMT, i cant do that. i have to scroll to see pieces of it. prophets you can
- May 4, 2018 at 2:54 pm #4083
Eugene: I have my charts set up to one-year weekly thingies. RARELY, if ever do I have 2 charts up at once, but I *know* it can be done. I use BVZ’s “grids” if that helps?
I have had no issues with charts in TOS on WMT or any other security.
Having not yet done the new chart upload, I can’t say anything about that. But it’s worth a try?
Haven’t used Prophet in well over a year. It’s going away, anyhow.
IF you are still having issues, I suggest calling TOS tech. (Some of them are super good, some not as great…)
- May 4, 2018 at 3:41 pm #4094
i did talk to TOS, and you cant do what i want. basically what im saying is that there are limitations to TOS that prophets can do and alot of limitations to prophets as well. but yes, of course we all know, TOS is the “VHS” that will stick around, and prophets is the betamax that will disappear soon.
what im trying to do is look at the ALL TIME chart for WMT. from 1970 to 2018. i want it all on one screen like prophets. i realize this isnt a common thing most people do, but i am evaluating many stocks on their all time basis.
- May 4, 2018 at 7:23 pm #4128
- May 4, 2018 at 7:27 pm #4130
Eugene: ALL time charts can be done in TOS and in BVZ’s stair step, but I’m sure you know that, and you are certainly better than me. ERC
- May 4, 2018 at 8:24 pm #4139
Haha Eva. No way I’m better than you. I’m just doing basic stuff. But I can see the entire chart in one window in prophets. Easier on my eyes.
- May 5, 2018 at 8:31 am #4184
Eugene, I understand your love for Prophet. I just won’t use it anymore. No way of telling when it will go away, but we have been informed by TDA more than once that there is no tech support. None of the instructors in ANY of the TDA classes use Prophet.
One suggestion is to email @brandonvanzee or DM him on TWTR. At one point in time, he was required to learn TOS at his ‘former employer,’ whereas @settledda was not.
I think David will come around eventually; not sure when. Charts are much more powerful than Prophet ever was.
Just my two cents. ERC
- May 5, 2018 at 2:14 pm #4239
Haha it’s not love for prophets, just what I’m used to. I’m just explaining certain advantages I see in prophets. By the way Dave settle and Dave Johnson still use prophets. I know settle had changed slowly as of the past week
- May 5, 2018 at 3:16 pm #4270
Eugene, I ‘get’ you, I honestly do. I forced myself to do a change in late 2016. That was *my* choice but it might not be yours.
I am well aware of DJ & DS and their observance/allegiance to Prophet. One day they will find the puppy gone….
What day? Zero clue. Old habits die hard, and I have chosen to adapt and move on.
- May 5, 2018 at 3:25 pm #4277
haha, good points. they will both transition soon i predict
- May 5, 2018 at 4:22 pm #4291
Glenn, we all take our chances, after careful review. ERC
- May 5, 2018 at 4:22 pm #4292
Same to Eugene. Stuff happens. ERC
- May 5, 2018 at 4:43 pm #4294
was trying to look back and see what glenn wrote, but i dont find it. what is your comment referencing eva?
- May 5, 2018 at 5:18 pm #4297
Eugene, it was about port allocation or options. I’ll look for it. BUT: Please give me a little time. Watching the prep for the KY Derby. Can your Q wait until later? Please advise if a tad of a wait would be OK by you?
- May 5, 2018 at 5:34 pm #4298
sure im in no hurry, take your time. but im not even sure i see glenns comments on this thread. so im lost
- May 5, 2018 at 5:52 pm #4300
Eugene, it might not be in THIS thread, but I shall find it after the KY Derby. Better yet, can it wait until about 5 AM CT tomorrow? ERC
- May 5, 2018 at 5:54 pm #4301
- May 5, 2018 at 7:43 pm #4318
Eugene – I sent you a portion of the thread from Glenn. Did you receive it? ERC
- May 5, 2018 at 8:48 pm #4322
Nope. How did you send it?
- May 5, 2018 at 8:59 pm #4327
OK, Eugene. I gotta go find it again. Please give me a few minutes…ERC
- May 5, 2018 at 9:08 pm #4328
- May 5, 2018 at 9:56 pm #4331
Im not signed up, cant access that page
- May 5, 2018 at 10:02 pm #4335
Oh, I did not know that. No wonder you could not get to the page. My bad? Your bad? Sign up?
WAY past my bedtime; choir is on in church tomorrow. Need rest and get my singing voice in order, LOL. ERC
- May 6, 2018 at 1:20 am #4345
Yes, im thinking of signing up, but i have recently signed up with dave johnsons class, so not sure i want to pay more for another class right now. by recently, i mean january 2018.
- May 6, 2018 at 7:39 am #4349
I didn’t know you weren’t a member. I thought you just weren’t signed up to that particular forum. Now, all is clear. DJ would not be worth it to me at ½ his price, but that’s just me….ERC
- May 6, 2018 at 2:13 pm #4362
lol, if you speak to the DJ community, they are total opposites hahah. most would pay DOUBLE what he is asking for. hahah. but yes, depends on your personality. i used to be more aligned with dave, but i think im more a passive investor at heart and not really an active trader who has to follow the market everyday. but i need to really think hard about signing up for another class at this time. if i found settle first, id probably be with you guys right now!
- May 6, 2018 at 5:21 pm #4374
- May 6, 2018 at 6:28 pm #4379
Haha I wish. No money back from dj unfortunately
- May 7, 2018 at 6:56 am #4390
Sorry to hear that, but it’s not atypical of educational companies. ERC
- May 7, 2018 at 9:20 am #4393
yep agreed. usually no money back guarantee
- May 7, 2018 at 9:21 am #4394
to be fair, dave johnson is one of the best teachers there are. he is so thorough as well as BVZ and settle. i love all three. so it comes down to personality style. dave is short term and teaches you how to trade like a professional. they all have their merits.
- May 7, 2018 at 9:45 am #4398
True, Eugene. All former IT coaches have different styles. I prefer long-term equities.
- May 7, 2018 at 10:03 am #4401
yes, turns out im the same way hahha.
- May 7, 2018 at 10:19 am #4402
Long term? Then why DJ? ERC
- May 7, 2018 at 10:38 am #4403
well to make a long story short, i have a sizable portfolio, and MOST of it in long term investments like DGI, SPY, etc. those are pretty much set to be buy and hold forever. a smaller portion of my portfolio, like 10-20% of it, which is in my roth iras, was planning on trading actively with dave.
DJ has more than doubled his paper trade account size since august 2017. over the past few months, his account has stalled a bit due to market conditions. when the market starts trending again, im sure he will really do well.
but his class takes alot of time. some people like this, some people dont.
since long term investing usually is set it and forget it, i geared my education more towards the shorter term active trading part.
i have come to the conclusion that im not as interested in putting in the amount of time with DJ. i put in about 30-40 hours a week on his stuff. but we’ll see how the rest of the year goes.
- May 7, 2018 at 10:41 am #4404
- May 7, 2018 at 1:21 pm #4415
settles class also takes much much less time than DJ haha.
- May 7, 2018 at 3:59 pm #4419
Eugene, true in general. IF you’re not in @settleda classes, *how* would you know? Just by the M. O.?
I don’t want to be “preaching” to the new choir, but…You need to do what you need to do. IMHO, it’s not how much TIME you spend with DJ, it’s QUALITY of time w/ @brandonvanzee and @settleda . THAT is where you shall find VALUE of time well-spent.
Your time frame for the discounted price quickly grows short. JULY 1, the discount ends for Market Scholars. I can’t tell you what to do or where to go.
Had this been a *real* life, and not just a *test* you would have been told what to do and where to go.
I’m telling you NOW. Take it or leave it. I’ve twisted a few arms. I’ve gotten folks to sign up for Market Scholars. They are SO SATISFIED!
That being said, the decision is yours.
(You can always join AFTER July 1, at a premium price of $3 K instead of $2 K. It’s STILL good for *THREE* years, whenever you join.)
There are *no* refunds. (Well, I suppose if you pass on?)
(I would be happy at 2X the price.) It is what it is.
I’ve already made my money back, but that’s just me. Can’t speak for other students.
- May 7, 2018 at 4:40 pm #4421
wow, all i can say is wow.
- May 7, 2018 at 4:41 pm #4422
question – “IF you’re not in @settleda classes, *how* would you know?”
answer – other students have told me the schedule.
- May 7, 2018 at 5:00 pm #4423
- May 7, 2018 at 5:06 pm #4424
yes, and for whats its worth, i wasnt implying that a longer class is “better” and shorter class is “worse”. in fact, i think an hour is good enough. longer than that, peoples attention span start to decline
